Tulane University, located in New Orleans, Louisiana, was selected on June 1, 1938, for the establishment of a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Unit. Since it’s inception, the Tulane NROTC Unit has aimed to commission the best best trained, most highly qualified, and dedicated Ensigns and Second Lieutenants in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Today, Tulane NROTC Unit is the fifth oldest of all units still active in the country and the fourth largest.
Winners of the NROTC scholarship at Tulane receive full scholarships covering tuition, fees, most book expenses, and a monthly stipend as well as a Tulane Cooperative Room and Board Scholarship Waiver. In total, an NROTC scholarship at Tulane is worth over $130,000.
Tulane NROTC midshipmen face demanding academic and extracurricular schedules. Navy Option midshipmen take Naval Science courses every semester and must complete courses in Physics, Calculus, Computer Science, English, and History, regardless of their major.
All midshipmen are also required to participate in at least one battalion extracurricular activity every semester. Activities include
NROTC midshipmen are also very active in the Tulane University community. Currently, midshipmen participate in student government organizations, varsity and intramural sports teams, tutoring programs, and in numerous university clubs and organizations.
There are four other universities that are a part of the Tulane NROTC unit: Xavier University of Louisiana, Dillard University, Loyola University of New Orleans, and the University of New Orleans. Two times a week, students from these universities commute to Tulane to participate in PT, drill, and other unit activities.
